If you haven't heard of Bamya, you are in for a treat! Bamya is Arabic for okra, and this hearty okra and meat stew will have your taste buds dancing. Here's how to make it.
Ingredients
1 bag frozen okra (or 1 lb fresh okra, trimmed)
1/3 lb meat, cubed
1/2 small onion, chopped
5 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 8-oz can tomato sauce
3-3 1/2 Cups water
3 tbsp shortening
Steps
Cook meat, onion, and garlic in shortening in a large frying pan over medium heat until onions are light golden brown
Add water, tomato sauce, and salt
Bring to boil and cook for 20 minutes
Add okra, let cook for 1 to 1 1/2 hours until only a small amount of sauce is left
*Important: Do not stir once okra is added
Slide carefully onto serving plate
